Invest in quality, achieve quality - Part 1
In this interview we chat with Sophie "Soph" Millard, a 25-year old apprentice training at WesTrac Mt Thorley (2020).
What did you do before becoming a WesTrac apprentice?
"Mostly I worked as a station hand, but I also did a few years of retail at a hardware store."
What are you most looking forward to?
"I'm excited to learn more about underground mining operations and get the opportunity to do some field service work."
What has been the best part of the program so far?
"Everyday I'm given a job that's new to me, no day is the same. I learn something new all the time and I love getting to work out how to fix/fabricate something different."
We are currently not taking applications for our 2021 Apprenticeship Program. Applications will open again later in the year. Stay tuned to our website and socials to stay in the loop.
What has been the most challenging part of the program so far?
"I was a bit worried when I found out I'd be the only female boilermaker on site, but my team have been amazing and always made me feel valued and respected from day one."
What is the environment and atmosphere like at WesTrac?
"It's a very supportive environment and there's always someone you can ask for help. It can get quite fast-paced, which I like, but I've found the pace is easy to navigate with common sense."
What are the best perks about being a WesTrac apprentice?
"The biggest perk is wearing the uniform. It's a privilege to learn my trade from such a respected company. I've always felt like an individual, not a number."
If you could give one piece of advice to future apprentices, what would it be?
"Apply even if you're nervous. I didn't know a thing when I first started but WesTrac value a dedicated attitude and they'll teach you the rest!"
In this interview we chat with Nathan Swinbourne, a 17-year old apprentice training at WesTrac Mt Thorley (2020).
