In this interview we chat with Ryan Manning, a 20-year old first year apprentice training at WesTrac South Guildford.
I worked on my family's farm doing all kinds of jobs, from operating machinery to mending fences. This apprenticeship is my first job!
I had always been interested in working on cars and farm equipment at home. There is something about fixing and maintaining things that I enjoy. I wanted to pursue a career that meant I'd be happy going to work everyday, so when I saw WesTrac was accepting applications, I jumped at the chance. With WesTrac being such a large company, I knew there would be opportunities to work in lots of different areas, on all types of equipment.
I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can to expand my knowledge as a diesel mechanic. I want to be able to repair a wide range of equipment with confidence.
Before starting my apprenticeship, I didn't know much about the mining industry and how it all operated. Since then I've been to the Pilbara region and learned how much it takes to run an efficient mine site operation. Every site is a like a giant machine, with hundreds of cogs all turning at once to make things run smoothly.
It's great. There are a lot of experienced mechanics that have a diverse range of knowledge and everyone is willing to help you out and show you the best way to do things. No matter your experience level, your work mates are there to help each other out and work as a team.
Always look for that opportunity to learn as much as you can an don't be afraid to put your hand up and give it a go. The best way to learn is by getting out there, outside your comfort zone, and giving it your best shot.
