In this interview we chat with Tim Scutt, a 32-year old mature age first year apprentice who started training at WesTrac Tomago in 2018.
Being a young father, a major consideration for me was job security. The sheer size of WesTrac and the fact that it's been growing steadily since the 90s were huge factors in my decision to apply for this Apprenticeship Program. I also wanted to work for a company that offered possibilities, diversity and variety in the jobs and career paths available. There are so many facets to the WesTrac business and so many branches that span across NSW, ACT and WA, a job at WesTrac could literally take me anywhere.
I'm looking forward to sinking my teeth into all kinds of challenging jobs, whilst working on all the different types of Cat machines. One day we might be learning about Excavator attachments, the next day we're taking oil samples from a giant Dozer. An apprenticeship anywhere else would be boring in comparison.
Learning how to run the transmission dyno (dynamometer). The dyno measures the torque a freshly built or brand-new transmission can handle without failure. It was interesting to see the finished transmissions I've just built being tested and run, just like they would in a machine.
Ask a lot of questions and don't be afraid to speak up if you don't understand something. Keep asking questions until you understand it. There is no such thing as a bad question when you are learning.
