PGC Irrigation keeps their cool
The Cat® 301.8 mini excavator is the first model in the range to have a sealed cab with air-conditioning, a valuable asset in the harsh Australian climate. It was the perfect choice for Perth-based PGC Irrigation Contractors.
Comfort and Efficiency in the Heat
It was a typical blistering hot summer’s day in Perth when Earthmoving Equipment Magazine caught up with Paul Cross of PGC Irrigation Contractors. He was hard at work installing pipes for a large primary school project.
All he needed for the dig was the latest Cat 301.8 mini excavator. Even though the mercury was shooting up to a forecast 40 degrees, Paul was unfazed. Why? Because he was working inside a sealed and pressurised cab equipped with air conditioning—chilling out while getting his work done, fast.
This feature is a first for the mini excavators, with previous models using only open cabs, making extended operation in high temperatures challenging. The introduction of air conditioning in the Cat 301.8 signifies Caterpillar’s commitment to operator well-being and marks a significant advancement in mini excavator design.

Electric Controls and Operator Comfort
Paul explained, “Previous models used to be fully hydraulic. Could you imagine all the hoses that had to go through the machine? It was like a mass of spaghetti, and now it’s just one bit of cable.”
“There are so many other benefits. We have electric actuators instead of hydraulic ones, which also keeps the weight of the machine down. Keeping the cab closed also keeps out dust and rain and keeps me protected from the elements.”
Paul also values the AC unit during the cold winter months.
“It’s great just sitting there toasty warm with the heater on, and safe from the winds and rain,” he said.

Compact, Fuel-Efficient Workhorse
Cab comfort is just one of the many features of the 301.8 that have made this model a purchase Paul has no regrets over. The excavator boasts strong lift and dig capabilities, compact size, and a retractable undercarriage for tight access.
Fuel efficiency is another highlight, thanks to:
- Auto Idle Capability
- Engine Idle Shutdown Timer
- Cruise Control
“The air con is great, and using it does not draw on power from or impact the performance of the excavator at all,” Paul said.
“It’s also roomy and I don’t feel claustrophobic inside.”
Blade Float and Heat Management
Paul praised the blade float function, which allows the dozer blade to follow ground contours naturally, improving trench cleanup and reducing operator fatigue.
Electric-over-hydraulic controls also reduce heat buildup inside the cab, allowing the AC system to work more efficiently.
“Electric controls require less energy, freeing up engine power that can be used to keep the air conditioning running more effectively.”

After-Sales Service That Delivers
“I was very disappointed in the after-sales service offered by the supplier of a previous brand I was using,” Paul said.
“Service is really important as it comes down to downtime of machinery, which we can’t afford, and parts availability.”
Paul now gets his Cat equipment from WesTrac and is absolutely happy with the service from sales consultant and account manager Matthew Curtis.
“Let me give you an example. The previous brand didn’t help me once the warranty ran out. But with my first Cat purchase, WesTrac resolved every issue and kept the machine running.”
Field Service and FitFleet® Support
Paul uses WesTrac’s field service for maintenance. “I used to do service and minor maintenance myself but now I leave it to the WesTrac field service team,” he said.
“With FitFleet, it’s just easier to get them to come out and do it.”
Matthew Curtis, who has managed Paul’s account for over 11 years, said, “He contacted us to upgrade his point 7s for something with more creature comforts, and we introduced him to the Next Gen model with the air con cab.”
Paul was impressed with the new features, including the Cat radio system and Bluetooth. “He was smitten,” Matthew said.

Safety and Productivity
Paul emphasised the importance of a sealed cab when working in potentially hazardous environments.
“The fully sealed pressurised cab offers complete safety when working in soil that’s potentially got asbestos or similar materials.”
Matthew added, “At WA mine sites, where temperatures can reach 45 degrees, enclosed AC cabs are essential for productivity and safety.”
Consistency Across Models
Paul noted the ease of transitioning between Cat machines. “From the mini into a six- or eight-tonner, operating them would be a breeze because the instrumentation, monitors, and joysticks are all the same. This consistency means operators don’t have to spend time learning different machines.”
Matthew echoed this, saying, “With electric-over-hydraulic systems, we’re not robbing Peter to pay Paul when it comes to power. The computer balances power throughout the machine.”

Lower Maintenance and Smarter Management
Less reliance on hydraulic components means lower maintenance costs. “We don’t need to worry about filters and serviceability costs on hydraulic parts,” Matthew said.
“The machines use less fuel and the savings more than make up for the purchase cost.”
FitFleet CVAs and VisionLink® asset management software help Paul proactively manage his equipment. These tools provide insights into performance, fuel usage, idle time, location, and maintenance needs—optimising productivity and reducing operating costs.
A Long-Term Commitment
“WesTrac has always done the right thing by me,” Paul said. “From warranty problems to getting parts, they’ve delivered. I believe it’s the culture of WesTrac to provide that level of service.”
“I will only keep on using Cat equipment in the future.”
