How the Caterpillar Technician Academy Sparked One Apprentice’s Future
For many young adults, the path to a fulfilling career isn’t always straightforward. But for WesTrac Apprentice Bindi, the Caterpillar Technician Academy (CTA) was the turning point that transformed her curiosity into a confident ‘yep, this is for me’ about working in the heavy machinery industry.
The CTA is a 17-week paid training program designed to upskill individuals with little to no industry experience. Once completed, participants walk straight into a Component Technician role within WesTrac WA’s Component Rebuilds Centre (CRC) in Guildford, WA. Delivered in partnership with Caterpillar, the program blends classroom learning and hands-on training at WesTrac’s Training Institute and CRC. Participants cover topics such as hydraulics, engines, cooling systems, and powertrain fundamentals.
With applications open Monday 17 to Friday 30 November 2025, the next intake will welcome ten aspiring technicians to start their journey on Monday 2, March 2026.
Bindi was part of WesTrac’s inaugural program, the first to be completed outside of the US in February of this year.
“I couldn’t think of a better place to start,” Bindi shares.
After a few months as a Component Technician, Bindi transitioned into a first-year mechanic apprenticeship in September.
“I’ve always wanted to be a plant mechanic,” she says. “Being able to grow with trainers and coworkers through the CTA just intrigued me more to become an apprentice.”
Bindi’s experience in the CTA laid a strong foundation for understanding day-to-day operations. “I got to work on large engines which was incredible, I got moved around different bays, learning and expanding my knowledge,” she said.
To make things better, the shift from being a Component Technician to an apprentice was met with nothing but encouragement from her CRC team. Bindi shares “they were very supportive about the move.”
For those considering the CTA or an apprenticeship at WesTrac, Bindi offers heartfelt advice:
“The CTA is a great way to get into the business, you’ll never stop learning, and it’s always okay to ask for help.”
