A Journey Full Circle: Why Heavy Diesel Mechanic Returned to WesTrac

Milton De Freitas joined WesTrac as an apprentice in 2012 before exploring opportunities elsewhere in the industry after completing his trade qualification.

While those experiences broadened his skills and exposed him to different ways of working, they also reinforced what he valued most in a workplace.

Today, Milton works in Rebuilds at WesTrac’s Welshpool facility, where he helps breathe new life into some of the world’s largest mining equipment.

His role involves diagnosing issues, inspecting components and rebuilding machines to as-new condition, including Cat® 793 Mining Trucks undergoing major rebuild programs.

For Milton, one of the most rewarding aspects of the job is seeing the transformation from start to finish.

“One of the things I enjoy most is watching an old, battered truck come into the workshop and seeing it leave looking immaculate and performing to the highest standard,” he said.

“I take a lot of pride in quality and attention to detail, so seeing a machine leave the workshop in top condition is incredibly satisfying.”

A day with Heavy Diesel Mechanic Milton

Since beginning his career with WesTrac, Milton has witnessed significant changes across the industry, particularly in technology, diagnostics and safety standards.

“The equipment is getting smarter every year, and there’s a lot more reliance on diagnostics and data than when I first started,” he said.

One of his proudest career achievements was leading his first complete strip and rebuild of a Cat 24M Grader – a project that challenged him technically and helped develop his leadership skills.

Another highlight was contributing to WesTrac’s large-scale 2016 chassis program, where the team successfully processed more than 300 Cat 793 trucks through the workshop.

“It was a massive undertaking, but with a strong crew, good leadership and a streamlined process, we consistently delivered within strict timeframes,” Milton said.

“Looking back, it’s something I’m really proud to have been part of and shows what can be achieved when everyone pulls in the same direction.”

While technical skills are a key part of the job, Milton credits much of his success to the people around him.

Throughout his career, he has learned from experienced tradespeople, mentors and leaders who were always willing to share their knowledge and support his development.

Now taking on leadership responsibilities himself, he enjoys passing on what he’s learned to the next generation of technicians.

“You truly never stop learning,” he said.

For those considering a career in the industry, Milton’s advice is simple: stay humble, work hard and be willing to learn.

“If you show up with a good attitude and are prepared to get involved, you’ll go a long way.”

Having experienced life both inside and outside the business, Milton is confident he made the right decision in returning.
