With our huge inventory of new, used and rental equipment, WesTrac has the right machine for the job.
Safety is one of our values and improving the safety of forklift operations is high on our priority list. Our Cat parts warehouses stock over 75,000 product lines and are operational 24/7, with forklifts being one of the critical components needed to keep everything on track. While getting parts picked, packed and delivered to our customers with efficiency is important, nothing trumps the safety of our people on the floor. For this reason, we partnered with Unearthed Solutions to launch the 2019 #LiftMeUp Forklift Challenge.
We challenged participants to identify ready-to-use systems in the market or develop solutions that would help mitigate incidents related to forklifts loading and unloading inventory. Unearthed Solutions created an avenue for anyone to present their suggestions before a judging panel, with the chance to win a $10,000 cash prize and a contract with WesTrac to develop their idea.
The winning solution was submitted by Dotnetix! The solution developed by the Dotnetix team proposes the use of a high accuracy laser-based miniature LIDAR proximity sensor to detect any object that may collide with the backrest of the forklift. The LIDAR would be installed on the tines and backrest of the forklift and facilitates detection in both vertical and horizontal directions to avoid collisions of materials, beams and pallets. Dotnetix team member Wietz Joubert said "We tapped into our vast engineering experience of solving problems, combined with our experience in the particular market to come up with a cost-effective solution that will benefit the client directly. We feel ecstatic about winning the competition and the opportunity to present our solution to WesTrac."
We received a number of impressive submissions and would like to congratulate our other winners:
Owen Beard and Team for their idea of Universal Field Robots.
Mladen Milivojevic and Team for their idea of FLT Backrest Safety Cover and Masahiro Yasumoto and Team for their idea of line-crossing monitoring system.
A special thank you and congratulations goes to Chris Gander of WesTrac's Marketing Team who has won a $1,000 connector prize for his recommendation of a forklift tracking solution using technology by Pozyx.
We would also like to take this opportunity to recognise Rebecca Cohen of the Used and Rental Team who also submitted a fantastic connector idea to increase the amount of storage space in the warehouse.
This challenge has been an example of the effective collaboration that is occurring throughout our business. In order for the #LiftMeUp challenge to be a success it was necessary for the Parts, Technology and HSE&Q teams to work closely together to reach a shared positive outcome. Well done to all of our winners!
