Interview with Apprentice Erin O'Connor (2019)

What did you do before becoming a WesTrac apprentice?

I was a lifeguard and duty manager at a few public swimming pools for about 6 years.

Why did you want to become a WesTrac apprentice?

WesTrac has a reputation in the industry for offering the best skills and training. That's what I wanted so I could become a qualified diesel mechanic. There were numerous ways I could have achieved that goal, but when people hear you were trained by WesTrac, that means something.

What are you most looking forward to in the WesTrac apprentice program?

I'm looking forward to gaining new skills and knowledge. Every week it feels like I'm adding a new tool to my kit and it's exciting to know that there is still so much I'll learn over the next few years.

What is the most interesting thing you have learned so far?

How diverse the Caterpillar product range is and how everything all works together. With numerous product categories and hundreds of models, each being customisable, every day in the apprentice program is different. One day we're learning how to service the undercarriage of a Dozer, next we're discovering how to take a fluid sample from a Motor Grader.

What's it like working at WesTrac?

Everyone I've worked with has been very helpful and supportive. I've made a bunch of friends here, both at work and those who I hang out with after work. I go to work smiling every day and that says something.

What is the best thing about working at WesTrac?

• There is a strong focus on working as a team
• They are really focused on skills training, for example, right now I'm learning welding and fabrication
• They offer generous amounts of leave and support when there is a sudden emergency and unexpected leave is required

If you could give future apprentices one piece of advice, what would it be?

Give it a shot. Safety is always priority. If you're unsure about anything, just ask.
