The importance of fluid sampling

CONTAMINATION CONTROL

Checking your machine’s fluids can save you time and money.

It can be thirsty work out there, which is why it is important for your machinery to stay hydrated.

Taking fluid samples from your machine regularly and getting them tested is important to help you keep your Cat machine running at its best. If it’s working at its best, you'll get more done and make more money.

Why take fluid samples?

Contamination control is vital for the health of your machine. And one of the best and simplest set of health checks is sampling and testing fluids.

These standard tests indicate wear rate, oil cleanliness, oil condition, and the detection of fuel, water and glycol.

Understanding the state of fluids in your machine allows you to address any issues before they become a problem. It means maximum reliability – and as we’ve said, that results in increased productivity and profitability.

Prevention is better than cure:

After all, effective preventative maintenance is estimated to be three to five times more cost-effective than unscheduled maintenance and repairs, which is why regular fluid sampling is the way to go.

Consistency is key:

It’s important to take fluid samples at the recommended intervals or at each oil change – these can be found in your Operation and Maintenance Manual.

How to take a fluid sample:

The testing process has never been easier with the Cat S•O•S Service Program. The program combines the simple process of fluid sampling with state-of-the-art analysis and clear, easy-to-understand reporting.

It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3:

  1. Take a sample: To start you need to buy a sampling kit and take a sample. Depending on your machine, you’ll need to take oil, brake, coolant and hydraulic fluid samples at different times – check your Operation and Maintenance manual for recommended service intervals. Cat machines are designed with easily accessed sampling points that let you get in, get the sample and get on with your day.
  2. Create a VisionLink Account: VisionLink is a web-based equipment management hub that provides you with access to all your equipment information including Cat S•O•S fluid sampling.
  3. Send your sample to WesTrac: the pre-paid postage bag inside the kit to mail your sample or drop into your nearest WesTrac branch.
